An innovative, entertaining and highly effective workshop designed to help students on the C/D borderline to improve their performance in Key Stage 4 Maths.

This workshop is highly interactive, great fun, and shows students how to use different learning tools to help them remember facts and skills when preparing for the Maths GCSE.

Description

Hooks, Lines & Thinkers - Maths is specifically for C/D borderline students in Years 10 and 11.

It is a two hour workshop and can be run for classroom sized groups or in seminar-style for up to 150 students. It is suitable from the start of the academic year to up to a week before major examinations.

Content

This two hour workshop is bursting at the seams with tools and techniques to support C/D borderline students
to raise their aspirations and achievement levels. It uses a variety of memory tools and simple techniques to look at:
2 new methods of simplifying multiplication without the need for calculators
Triangles and Angles – including calculating external & internal angles
The relationship between percentages, decimals and fractions and how to convert from one to the other
Using positive and negative numbers
How to ensure you have read the question fully - and understood it!
How to break questions down and show your calculations
Simplifying expressions

Aims

To help students revise for GCSE Maths exams and to empower them with innovative, memorable, creative and
effective learning tools.
To raise aspiration and achievement levels of C/D borderline students.

Results

Students will be amazed at their ability to remember core processes and skills and be inspired to improve their performance in maths.
Students will be empowered with a range of simple and effective tools and techniques for learning.
Students will leave with raised aspirations, self-confidence and will be equipped to raise their achievement levels.

"Jay’s enthusiasm, knowledge of the strategies, techniques and tips was excellent and was exactly what we were looking for at this time in Year 11 for our students and parents. It’s testament to Jay and the workshop as to how many pupils had told their parents about how much they enjoyed it and how useful they found it that some students were calling and texting their parents during the school day to say ‘Mum/Dad you need to come to the Parent’s workshop this evening!’ The strategies were relevant, easy to use, engaging and delivered in a way which will facilitate the students use of them as well. It was great to be given some resources by Jay in order to support the pupils through the revision process as the year goes on as well. I will look to rebook this event for next years, Year 11 at a similar time."
